Intraoperative Irrigation of Peritoneal Cavity and Wound with Betadine^(¢ç) Solution in Diffuse Septic Peritonitis

Abstract
A prospective randomized investigation was undertaken, involving 74 patients undergoing laparotomy for the diffuse septic peritonitis, to evaluate the effectiveness of Betadine irrigation of the peritoneum in preventing the development of intraabdominal abscess and/or sepsis and to evaluate the effectiveness of Betadine irrigation of wownd in preventing the development of wound infection. For peritoneal irrigation, 2.5m1 of 10¡Æ0¢¥ Betadine solution per kg body weight was used in the concentration of 1% and 5%. In the treatment group irrigated with Betadine solution, 2 of 49 patients had an intraabdominal abscess, 4. 1%, while, in the control group irrigated with copious saline solution, 3 of 25 patients had an intraabdominal abscess and/or sepsis, 12.0%, p>0. 1. There was no difference of incidence of an intraabdominal abscess and/or sepsis between 1% Betadine solution group and 5% Betadine solution group. In the group irrigated the wound with Betadine solution, 5 of 49 patients had a wound infection, 10. 2%, while, in the contral group irrigated with saline solution, 8 of 25 patients had a wound infection, 32.000, p<0.01. There was slight decrease of the mean duration of hospital stay and the mean duration of postoperative atonia in the Betadine solution group, comparing to those in the control group.
